The relationship between Enfield Town Football Club and the pyramid

This page attempts to explain where Enfield Town Football Club is in relation to the structue of football in England,

Pyramid
In England, there are five national leagues with regional feeder leagues below them. The feeder leagues become more and more regional as they get further away from the top. The structure is therefore similar to a pyramid representing the feeder leagues with an antenna on top representing the national leagues. The top of the antenna can be represented by a crown, the kings of football.

Promotion and Relegation

Between the top four national leagues, there is a system of three up and three down, meaning that three clubs are promoted each season and three are relegated. Between the fourth and fifth national leagues, there is a system of one up and one down, meaning that only one team is promoted and one is relegated each season. I have represented this as a bottleneck near the base of the antenna.

Regional Leagues

As the structure becomes regional, more teams are relegated from one league as are promoted from the more regional leagues below. So three teams are relegated from the fifth national league, known as the Conference, and one team is promoted from each of three regional feeder leagues. One of the three regional feeder leagues to the Conference is the Rymans League Premier Division.

Rymans

The Rymans League is restructuring at the end of season 2001-2. The current structure is that it does not become more regional. Below the Premier Division is a Division 1. Below that is a Division 2. Below that is a Division 3. Finally, the Ryman League Division 3 has three more regional leagues as feeder leagues. These leagues are outside the structure of the Rymans League.

Enfield Town Football Club

Enfield Town Football Club play in the Foresters Essex Senior League, which is one of the three regional feeder leagues to the Ryman League Division 3. The other two feeder leagues are the Combined Counties League and Spartan South Midlands League. So, there are five national leagues and four Ryman divisions above the Foresters Essex Senior League. Enfield Town Football Club therefore play in the tenth level of the structure.
